Blondie - Hanging On The Telephone 7''

"Hanging on the Telephone" is a masterclass in power-pop efficiency, clocking in at just over two minutes of sustained, high-voltage urgency. By taking a relatively obscure track by The Nerves and infusing it with Mike Chapman’s polished, aggressive production, Blondie created a definitive New Wave anthem. The song’s brilliance lies in its relentless momentum—driven by Clem Burke’s frantic drumming and a double-tracked telephone ring—that perfectly mirrors the anxiety and obsession of the lyrics.
Debbie Harry’s performance is the track's heartbeat, pivoting between a cool, detached swagger and a breathless, desperate yearning. Her delivery elevates the song from a simple cover to a cinematic moment, capturing the frantic energy of 1970s New York City. While it remains one of the more "rock" moments on the Parallel Lines album, its infectious melody and tight execution proved that Blondie could dominate the charts without sacrificing their punk-adjacent grit.

  1. and were it not for Blondie Fan Club member Jeffrey Lee Pierce (later of The Gun Club of course) loving the song and sending a copy of the Nerves EP to the band and recommending the tune, the song would've likely been forgotten!!!

    1. Of course, so many people forget, or didn't know, that Jeff was a massive Blondie fan, so much so that The Gun Club's second album was produced by Chris Stein and released on Chris's record label.
