Front Line Assembly - Provision 12''

Released in late 1990 as the second heavy assault weapon from Caustic Grip, the "Provision" 12" single is a masterclass in aggressive, late-era EBM and industrial dance. Distributed through the twin underground pipelines of Europe's Third Mind Records (TMS 57) and Chicago’s legendary Wax Trax! Records (WAX 9145), this release captured the Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber partnership at its most clinical and unrelenting. The artwork itself—featuring digitized CGI abstract imagery credited to Christian Mumenthaler—perfectly encapsulated the dystopian, technological dread spinning at 45 RPM inside the sleeve.
The architectural blueprint of this 12" maxi-single is lean, mean, and built exclusively for club system devastation. Rather than bloating the release with half-baked ambient padding, Front Line Assembly delivered a laser-focused, two-track punch. Side A features the extended "Provision" (12" Mix), clocking in at nearly six and a half minutes of metallic fury. Flip the wax over to Side B, and you’re met with the equally brutal "Overkill" (Surge Mix), a heavily re-engineered, propulsive take on the album track that pushed the Atari hardware and Akai samplers well into redline territory.

Front Line Assembly - Caustic Grip

Before they transformed into cyberpunk prophets, Vancouver’s Front Line Assembly was a claustrophobic machine operating out of a cramped apartment. Released in August 1990, Caustic Grip is the definitive turning point where the project evolved from a solo endeavor by Bill Leeb into a legendary electronic duo with the permanent addition of Rhys Fulber. Cut on a lean setup of Akai samplers, an Atari computer, and raw analog synths, the album bypassed the dark ambient sludge of their earliest tapes. Instead, it injected a lethal dose of adrenaline straight into the industrial underground, split across Europe's Third Mind Records and America's legendary Wax Trax! Records.
Caustic Grip stands as a masterclass in clinical, high-tempo Electronic Body Music (EBM) and heavy electro-industrial. It stripped away the guitars that were beginning to dominate the broader 90s industrial scene, choosing instead to weaponise pure, sequenced electronic percussion, found-sound vocal samples, and jagged basslines. Driven by underground dancefloor anthems like "Iceolate" and "Mental Distortion" (both famously crowned Single of the Week by Melody Maker), the album didn’t just cement FLA's reputation—it drew the blueprint for the entire next decade of futuristic, dystopian dance music.
