Bpeople was an influential Pasadena and Los Angeles-based post-punk and art-rock band formed in April 1979 under the leadership of frontman, guitarist, and producer Alex Gibson. Originally performing under names like Little Cripples and Strict Ids—a line-up that briefly included Michael Gira before he relocated to New York to form Swans—the band established themselves as distinct anomaly in the Southern California music scene. Rejecting the straightforward, aggressive thrash of contemporary hardcore punk, Bpeople instead crafted a cold, cerebral, and melancholic sound. Driven by the distinct saxophone and minimal synthesiser work of Patrick Delaney, their brash sonic experimentation and moody atmospheres frequently earned them artistic comparisons to British post-punk pioneers like Wire and Joy Division.
The definitive document of their studio output arrived with their 1981 self-titled mini-album, Bpeople, released as an eight-track, 12-inch vinyl EP on Miles Copeland's Faulty Products label (FEP 1300). This release features landmark underground tracks such as "Can Can't", "In The Mind", and the sprawling six-minute closer "Song Of The Children". Engineered by Paul McKenna, the EP captured the band's jagged guitar lines, mechanical rhythmic section, and art-punk sensibilities. The release solidifed their reputation among collectors of early American darkwave and minimal synth music, giving them wider underground prominence alongside their inclusion on Jello Biafra's seminal Let Them Eat Jellybeans! compilation.
Though the band dissolved shortly after their peak era as members pursued other projects, their legacy was preserved via the 1986 archival compilation album, Petrified Conditions 1979-1981. Released by Restless Records, this posthumous compilation gathered the band's essential recordings from their active years. To prepare the release, Alex Gibson teamed up with renowned combat-rock producer Geza X and Paul B. Cutler to carefully remix the band's original 4-track and 16-track master tapes. Accompanied by historical liner notes from iconic Flipside Magazine writer Claude Bessy, Petrified Conditions remains a highly sought-after artifact that bridges the gap between California's early punk explosion and the global post-punk movement.
