Since their early days as the Green Telescopes in Edinburgh during the mid-80s, The Thanes, fronted by indestructible garage/beat aficionado Lenny Helsing, have faithfully followed the pathway of purists dictated by the strict stylistic norms of the garage/beat heyday circa 1964-68. Originally part of the international garage revival of the early-to-mid-80s and, unlike so many of their peers and contemporaries who subsequently either fell by the wayside or have been largely forgotten, The Thanes have prospered with the passing of time. This 27-track retrospective of their recorded output includes material from The Thanes Of Cawdror (1987), Undignified Noblemen (1997), Downbeat & Foked Up (2003), plus EPs Hey Girl + 6 and Learning Greek Mythology With The Thanes, the 10” mini-LP Better Look Behind You, and a selection of rare limited 45s and unreleased flexis, which originally appeared (or not, as the case may be) on a variety of labels. All told, it works well both as an introduction to The Thanes and as a collection of those elusive rarities.
