When punk-blues visionaries The Gun Club fractured following their Las Vegas Story tour, guitarist Kid Congo Powers and bassist Patricia Morrison found themselves stranded in London. Rather than retreating, they joined forces with Siouxsie and the Banshees guitarist Murray Mitchell and drummer Desi Desperate to form the short-lived, enigmatic post-punk outfit Fur Bible. Released in December 1985 on the legendary French imprint New Rose Records, the Plunder the Tombs 12" stood as the band’s striking, singular artistic testament before they vanished back into the underground ether.
The three-track EP marked a historic milestone: it was the first record to feature Kid Congo Powers stepping out from the shadow of Jeffrey Lee Pierce to take over lead vocals. Produced by the industrial pioneer Clint Ruin (better known as J.G. Thirlwell of Foetus), the record was a masterclass in claustrophobic, swampy garage-goth. Though it barely registered on the mainstream radar at the time, this elusive, Europe-only release became a mythic holy grail for vinyl collectors and a crucial stepping stone before Morrison joined The Sisters of Mercy.
