Various Artists - Classic Alternatives (Vol 3)

Classic Alternatives (Vol. 3) is a curated compilation album released in 1995 by the specialized Canadian record label SPG Music. Serving as a sonic time capsule for the late 1970s and 1980s, the album caters heavily to enthusiasts of new wave, synth-pop, post-punk, and early alternative rock. Unlike generic decade retrospectives that rely on standard radio edits, this specific volume earned a dedicated following among DJs and collectors for its commitment to rare 12-inch extended versions, obscure club remixes, and hard-to-find dance mixes that defined underground nightlife during the era.
The tracking playlist spans 12 meticulously selected songs from definitive artists of the period, including Killing Joke, Ultravox, The Stone Roses, and Visage. While the overarching energy of the album relies on driving synth beats and elongated club cuts—such as Pete Shelley’s "Homosapien (Elongated Dancepartydubmix)"—it also strategically includes atmospheric, unremixed masterpieces like The Church's "Under the Milky Way" to vary the tempo. Out of print for decades, physical CD copies of this release remain highly sought-after collector's items on secondary music marketplaces.

Various Artists - Classic Alternatives Vol.1

Released in 1994 by the Toronto-based dance label SPG Music Ltd., Classic Alternatives Volume 1 serves as the definitive launchpad for the celebrated Canadian compilation series. Spanning a generous 79-minute runtime across 12 tracks, the album focuses heavily on rare, extended 12-inch vinyl versions and club remixes from the peak of the 1980s New Wave and Synth-Pop eras. It carved out a distinct niche for collectors by preserving highly sought-after club mixes that were rapidly becoming difficult to find on the maturing compact disc market.
The tracklist boasts a powerhouse lineup of alternative club staples, highlighted by the "O.N. Mix" of "The Promise" by When In Rome and the sweeping 9-minute extended cut of "Smalltown Boy" by Bronski Beat. Listeners are treated to massive collaborative anthems like Philip Oakey & Giorgio Moroder's "Together in Electric Dreams", alongside timeless cuts like A Flock of Seagulls' "I Ran", Yello's "Oh Yeah", and The Psychedelic Furs' rare "Heartbeat (New York Remix)". The compilation balances these international chart-toppers with regional flair by incorporating Canadian alternative touchstones, such as the Juno Award-winning single "Eyes of a Stranger" by the Payola$.
