The Hope Blister was a studio-based dream pop project formed by Ivo Watts-Russell, the founder of the influential British independent record label 4AD. Conceived as a spiritual successor to his highly acclaimed collective This Mortal Coil, the project allowed Watts-Russell to continue his passion for reinterpreting obscure and deeply emotional songs. Released in 1998, the project's sole studio album, ...smile's OK, features lead vocals by Scottish singer Louise Rutkowski, alongside a core group of musicians providing stark, melancholy instrumentation.
The album is celebrated for its minimalist, slow-core arrangements that transform original tracks by artists such as David Sylvian, Brian Eno, John Cale, and Chris Bell into haunting, atmospheric soundscapes.
