Forget the standard promotional LP bait. Led by the restless brain of Jimme O'Neill, Scottish post-punk anomalies Fingerprintz dropped the Who’s Your Friend? 7-inch EP as a pure D.I.Y. statement of intent. Issued by Virgin Records on stunning translucent blue wax—and wrapped in a deeply unsettling sleeve featuring a ventriloquist dummy gnawing on Christmas lights—this four-track beast completely bypassed their debut album (The Very Dab), trading mainstream pop aspirations for a frantic, claustrophobic slice of late-70s underground art.
Drop the needle on the title track and you're instantly hit with a jagged, stuttering wave of post-punk anxiety. It’s tense, hyperventilating pop that careens wildly into a paranoid, skeletal cover of The Beatles' "Do You Want To Know A Secret?". Instead of playing it safe, Fingerprintz intentionally weaponise friction, trading the era's standard New Wave gloss for raw, angular guitar spikes that feel like they're about to snap mid-groove.
But it’s the B-side where the band truly flips the script, abandoning punk orthodoxy to plunge headfirst into a dark, minimalist soundscape. "Nervz" and "Night Nurse" push a massive, dub-infused reggae bassline directly into your chest, drowning the mix in heavy studio echo and vast, empty space. It's a brilliant, polarizing detour into dance-noir territory that proves these guys weren't looking for casual listeners—they were building an obsessive, high-tension vinyl artifact.
