Child Of Night - Neither Of These Alone Is Enough 2018

Neither of These Alone Is Enough is a pivotal 2018 cassette EP by the American darkwave project Child of Night, originating from Columbus, Ohio. The release is heavily characterized by its stark, retro-futuristic blend of post-punk, electronic body music (EBM), and coldwave. Built upon a foundation of mechanical drum loops, pulsating analog synth basslines, and distant, reverb-soaked vocals, the EP evokes a sense of urban isolation and nocturnal dread. It firmly established the band's identity within the global goth subgenre, highlighting their ability to fuse danceable electronic rhythms with deeply melancholic atmospheres.
The release gained broader international attention through the Berlin-based underground label Detriti Records, which eventually compiled it with the band's other early material for a comprehensive vinyl distribution. This collaboration helped propel Child of Night from a local DIY act into the broader international dark electronic scene, paving the way for their subsequent full-length studio albums and extensive touring. Today, the EP is remembered by fans as a definitive snapshot of the late-2010s darkwave revival, capturing a raw, uncompromising energy that continues to define the band's signature sonic landscape.

Child of Night's 2018 release Neither of These Alone Is Enough stands as a masterclass in modern underground darkwave, perfectly capturing the suffocating, mechanical isolation of late-2010s post-punk. The EP thrives on its austere production choices, layering throbbing, industrial-tinged EBM basslines underneath walls of icy, reverb-soaked synthesizers. Far from just a nostalgic retread of 1980s tropes, the music feels remarkably urgent; the drum machine programming acts as a rigid, unyielding heartbeat that propels the tracks forward through a hazy cityscape of sonic despair.
What elevates this specific collection—especially when experienced via its expanded Detriti Records compilation—is the brilliant juxtaposition between physical aggression and ghostly emotional distance. The vocals are buried intentionally deep within the mix, echoing like a distant radio transmission across a desolate factory floor. By balancing club-ready, danceable rhythms with a deeply melancholic atmosphere, the band proves that electronic music can be simultaneously punishing and deeply poignant, cementing their status as vital contemporary voices in the goth subgenre.
