Child Of Night - Breathless EP 2017

Opening today's postings is a band all of you have never heard of. This is going to be an all day adventure for those who stop by today, so say welcome to Child Of Night (or C.O.N. as they're sometimes known).

Breathless is a five-track extended play (EP) released in September 2017 by the Columbus, Ohio-based darkwave and post-punk band Child of Night. Clocking in at 18 minutes, the EP delivers a distinct blend of melancholic synthesizer arrangements, driving basslines, and lo-fi coldwave atmospheres characteristic of the modern underground goth scene. Put out via Knife Vision Records—with physical cassette runs later seeing distribution through underground labels like Detriti Records—the release features standout tracks like "Hope Is All We Have" and "Graves," cementing the band's signature style of blending dark electronic dance beats with brooding, cinematic vocals.

Child of Night's 2017 debut EP, Breathless, is a brilliantly calculated plunge into the icy depths of modern darkwave and coldwave. Spanning just 18 minutes, the Columbus duo establishes an immediately arresting sonic identity built upon minimalist hardware setups, relentless drum-machine patterns, and brooding basslines. Opening tracks like "Hope Is All We Have" anchor the listener in a bleak, post-punk landscape where the instrumentation feels both suffocatingly industrial and hypnotically danceable. The project thrives on this deliberate tension, striking a perfect balance between underground, tape-hiss intimacy and the commanding presence of club-ready, electronic body music (EBM) hooks.
Where the EP truly shines is in its atmospheric commitment and deadpan vocal delivery. Tracks like "Graves" and the namesake "Breathless" masterfully channel a sense of impending doom, utilizing stark, frozen synthesizer lines that cut clean through the heavy low-end rhythm sections. Rather than leaning into hyperactive production, the band allows the repetitive, circular nature of their arrangements to lull the listener into a hypnotic, trance-like headspace. It is a remarkably confident first offering that sidesteps generic goth tropes, leaning instead into a raw, cinematic gravity that firmly established Child of Night as an essential, emerging cell in the American underground scene
