Captain Sensible (born Raymond Ian Burns) is an English singer, songwriter, and guitarist who co-founded the legendary punk rock band The Damned in 1976. Initially playing bass before switching to lead guitar, he helped shape the raw energy of the early UK punk scene, contributing to historic releases like "New Rose"—widely recognized as the first British punk rock single. Instantly recognizable by his trademark red beret, round white sunglasses, and chaotic sense of humor, he became one of punk's most colorful and enduring figures, balancing high-energy rock showmanship with sharp melodic songwriting.
In the 1980s, he launched a highly successful solo career that showcased his versatile, pop-oriented musical sensibilities. He achieved an unexpected UK number-one hit in 1982 with his playful cover of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s "Happy Talk," followed by the international club hit "Wot" and the poignant anti-war anthem "Glad It's All Over." Throughout his decades-long career, he has seamlessly drifted between mainstream pop success and alternative subcultures, frequently rejoining The Damned for tours and albums while remaining an eccentric icon of British music.
