Stiff Little Fingers - Suspect Device 7'' (2nd Edition)

Released in 1978 on the band's independent Rigid Digits label (catalogue number SRD-1), the second edition of Stiff Little Fingers' debut 7" single, "Suspect Device," transitioned the iconic punk track from the ultra-rare hand-stamped first pressing to a formal commercial run. Featuring "Wasted Life" on the B-side, this highly collectible repress is famously distinguished by its solid-centre design and three distinct paper label colour variations: cream, red, and yellow. Today, it remains a highly sought-after piece of early Northern Irish punk history, typically trading among vinyl collectors for anywhere between £30 and £70+ depending on the specific label variant and sleeve condition.

Originally unleashed in 1978, the second edition 7" of Stiff Little Fingers’ "Suspect Device" captures the raw, combustive energy of a band channelled directly through the socio-political pressure cooker of late-70s Belfast. The title track remains a masterclass in first-wave punk rock, trading the art-school cynicism of their London contemporaries for explosive, three-chord urgency and Jake Burns' iconic, gravel-throated delivery. Driven by a blistering tempo, its lyrics directly confront the psychological toll of the Troubles, urging a youth culture caught in the crossfire to think for themselves rather than become another cog in the violence.
Flip the vinyl over to the B-side, "Wasted Life," and the single cements its status as a seminal punk artifact rather than a mere one-hit wonder. This track doubles down on the band's anti-sectarian message, pairing a relentless, driving bassline with a ferocious rejection of paramilitary recruitment. While this Rigid Digits second pressing traded the hand-stamped DIY aesthetic of the initial run for standard commercial labels, the analog crunch of the audio remains entirely unpolished and visceral. It stands not only as a vital historical document of Northern Irish resistance but as a timeless, razor-sharp musical statement that still sounds completely vital today.
