Blondie - Union City Blue 7''

"Union City Blue" stands as one of Blondie’s most cinematically evocative and underrated tracks, capturing a unique intersection of urban melancholy and new wave energy. Co-written by Debbie Harry and bassist Nigel Harrison, the song was inspired by Harry’s time filming the neo-noir movie Union City and her own roots in New Jersey. Critics have long praised the track for its "incantatory" force, where Harry’s sweet yet intense vocals blend seamlessly with a dense, shimmering arrangement of guitars and keyboards. It is a masterclass in atmosphere, managing to sound both nostalgic and futuristic, with lyrics that hint at a passionate but illicit romance against the backdrop of a gritty city skyline.
The driving heart of the single is Clem Burke’s explosive drumming, which he famously performed in an over-the-top manner during what was meant to be a simple run-through; producer Mike Chapman loved the energy so much he declared it the final take. While it reached #13 on the UK charts in late 1979, the 7-inch was notably never released as a single in the United States, making it a "hidden gem" for many North American fans. The B-side, "Living In The Real World," offers a starker contrast with its high-velocity punk attitude, but it is the soaring, anthemic quality of the A-side that has cemented the single's legacy as a cornerstone of the Eat to the Beat era.
