Various Artists - Shaving The Pavement

A selection of 4AD artists circa spring 1996, "Shaving The Pavement" (catalog number PRO-C-8096). It was a promotional compilation given away for free during the spring 1996 U.S. tour of the same name, which featured 4AD artists Lush, Mojave 3, and Scheer. The cassette features the 4AD circular logo and a Spooky logo in orange on a black background, with "advance cassette" printed in white at the bottom. Beyond being handed out at concerts, it was also given away in Canada with the purchase of any 4AD release at the time.

Shaving The Pavement features 12 tracks from the label's roster at the time. The first six tracks highlight the bands on the tour—Lush, Mojave 3, and Scheer—while the B-side features other 4AD artists. Different versions of two of the tracks on the B-side, Tarnation's "Halfway To Madness"; this is not the same recording as on their Gentle Creatures album, it's a slower/longer take (5:36 vs 4:39). It's good too! And Heidi Berry's "The Devil" doesn't seem to have appeared anywhere else in any shape or form.
