Ground Nero - Beyond EP

Straight from the rain-slicked, industrial heart of Belgium's dark subculture comes a relentless wave of modern melancholy. Formed by a collective of underground veterans, Ground Nero broke out of the shadows to deliver a pristine, textbook tutorial in how to keep gothic rock dangerously sharp, raw, and heavy. Originally self-released in December 2016 before catching the attention of Gothic Music Records for a wider limited CD release, the Beyond EP stands as an absolute beacon of traditional, no-nonsense goth excellence.
This debut five-track mini-album acts as a sonic manifesto, positioning Ground Nero firmly alongside the legendary heritage of Belgian coldwave and classic third-wave British goth rock. Backed by the unmistakable, baritone snarl of vocalist Gwijde De Eerste, the band avoids the overly glossy synth-pop cliches of the era. Instead, they lean hard into a stripped-back, bass-driven blueprint that feels deeply nostalgic yet fiercely alive.

The record kicks its way into the light with "Run From Your Relatives," a blistering, propulsive anthem built on a textbook, driving post-punk bassline that instantly locks you into its groove. Bassist Peter Philtjens and guitarist Peter Smeets construct a suffocating, majestic wall of sound, weaponizing swirling delay pedals and razor-sharp riffs that echo the peak eras of The Sisters of Mercy and The Fields of the Nephilim. Rather than simply copy-pasting the past, Ground Nero plays with an infectious, organic urgency—the rhythm section hits with real physical weight, completely unburdened by over-production.
The centerpieces of the EP, "Arctic" and "The Trouble Beyond," push the band's atmospheric limits into vastly colder, cinematic territory. "Arctic" creeps forward on a slow, icy burn, pairing sprawling, cavernous synths with a repetitive, hypnotic guitar melody that perfectly captures the desolate isolation of its title. Gwijde De Eerste delivers an absolute masterclass of a vocal performance here, his mournful, gravelly baritone hanging in the echo chamber like a dark fog over a frozen winter cityscape. It’s an immersive, moody exercise in building slow-rolling tension before the track explodes into a glorious, feedback-laden storm.
By the time the record draws to a close with the twin punches of "The Ban" and "Dark Descent," the sheer cohesion of this release becomes undeniable. "Dark Descent" serves as the perfect final bow, dropping the tempo into a heavy, stomping march that pulls the listener straight into the abyss. Every element on this EP is executed with the sharp precision of life-long scene devotees who know exactly how to make a guitar weep and a bassline throttle. For anyone looking to understand the enduring, pitch-black power of the Belgian post-punk underground, tracking down Beyond on Bandcamp or Spotify isn't just highly recommended—it’s an absolute rite of passage.
