B.F.G. – The Complete

The Complete Compilation 86/89 is a comprehensive retrospective album by the British post-punk and gothic rock band B.F.G., capturing the dark, atmospheric energy of the late 1980s alternative underground scene. Released digitally through Attica Records and available on major platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Bandcamp, the 13-track collection gathers the band's most influential early singles, EPs, and rare mixes produced between 1986 and 1989. The album features their signature brooding vocals, driving basslines, and swirling guitars, epitomised by fan-favourite underground anthems such as "Amelia", "Western Sky", and multiple versions of "Paris".
Beyond serving as a digital archive, the compilation holds significant historical value for collectors and enthusiasts of the UK darkwave and post-punk movements. Original physical pressings of B.F.G.'s discography remain highly sought after on marketplaces like Discogs, making this definitive compilation an accessible entry point for modern listeners exploring the era's gothic subculture. By anchoring these rare tracks in one place, the release cements B.F.G.'s legacy alongside their 1980s contemporaries, preserving a distinct chapter of British independent music.

The Complete Compilation 86/89 stands as a monumental time capsule, resurrecting the sharp edge and shadowy allure of the British underground during a pivotal era for alternative music. This 13-track collection by B.F.G. seamlessly binds together rare early singles, crucial EPs, and distinctive mixes that define the band’s legacy. Far from a simple nostalgia trip, the compilation—accessible across prominent streaming services like Spotify and Bandcamp—proves how ahead of their time the group truly was, capturing a specific window where post-punk’s jagged rhythm morphed into gothic rock’s grand, atmospheric scope.
Musically, the compilation is a masterclass in tension and release, driven by robust basslines and piercing guitar work that rival their most famous contemporaries. Tracks like "Amelia" and the definitive "Western Sky" immediately demand attention, laying down an infectious blueprint of rhythmic drive and brooding vocal delivery. The inclusion of differing cuts, such as the Paris 7" alongside the sweeping Paris 12" InSeine Mix, highlights a fascinating studio versatility. Rather than suffering from the disjointed production often plaguing archival packages, the album feels remarkably cohesive, maintaining a dark, driving momentum from start to finish.
The record's greatest strength lies in its raw, unrelenting energy, striking an elusive balance between danceable post-punk rhythms and melancholic art rock. The rhythm section acts as an unwavering anchor throughout the tracking list, allowing the swirling, chorused guitars to paint sonic landscapes that feel both bleak and triumphant. Songs like "Higher Than Heaven Is" and "No Two Things" display the band's keen ear for melodic hooks beneath their shadowy veneer. This collection showcases a band fully formed and confident, carving out their own unique identity at a time when the independent charts were overflowing with lookalikes.
Ultimately, this compilation functions as an essential, high-quality gateway for both casual listeners of the genre and dedicated vinyl collectors navigating marketplaces like Discogs. It successfully prevents stellar tracks like "Murder" and "Fade Away" from being lost to time, elevating B.F.G. from an obscure trivia note to a recognized force in the late-80s darkwave movement. For anyone seeking to understand the genuine DNA of British gothic rock before it entered the mainstream, this anthology is a mandatory, deeply rewarding listen.

    3. I'm gonna disagree. Especially in the oldest songs of the comp, they position themselves exactly in between Sisters Of Mercy and The Mission, which is an extremely narrow space to try and worm yourself into but they manage to do so anyway. No small feat.

(It may not sound like it, but I really liked the record.)
