Heaven Is Waiting [Expanded Edition] is the definitive, 15-track compact disc remaster of the landmark second studio album by Barnsley gothic rock pioneers The Danse Society. Originally released in December 1983 and kept in circulation through archival reissues on Cherry Red Records' Anagram Goth imprint, this edition represents the band's major-label debut following their high-profile signing to Arista Records. The core album peaked at Number 39 on the UK Albums Chart, yielding international alternative club hits like its lush, driving title track and a brooding cover of the Rolling Stones' psychedelic classic "2000 Light Years From Home".
Recorded across legendary UK studio spaces including Britannia Row and Ridge Farm, this expanded curation carefully appends five essential bonus tracks—such as "Arabia", "Seen The Light", and "Endless"—partially sourced from the album's original, highly sought-after cassette edition. It stands as a vital, high-utility document of the early 1980s darkwave movement, illustrating the band's peak creative era of expansive synthesizer arrangements, cinematic production values, and theatrical post-punk songwriting. The physical CD release is packaged with extensive liner notes and rare archival imagery, making it an essential artifact for vinyl-era music historians and collectors tracking the evolution of British alternative music.
This expanded edition of Heaven Is Waiting solidifies the album's legacy as a widescreen darkwave masterpiece, marking the exact moment The Danse Society traded the claustrophobic shadows of the underground for polished, major-label grandeur. Backed by Arista's significant financial resources, the band crafted an incredibly dense, cinematic wall of sound that immediately establishes its footprint on opening tracks like "Come Inside" and "Wake Up". David Whitaker's sweeping, icy synthesizer textures intertwine flawlessly with Paul Nash’s chorus-heavy guitar architecture, creating a sonic landscape that feels both intensely vast and deeply intimate. Frontman Steve Rawlings guides this monumental instrumentation with an authoritative, majestic baritone that sounds remarkably crisp on this modern remaster, anchoring songs that feel intensely dramatic yet entirely suited for European alternative dance floors.
What makes this record a triumph of the post-punk era is how seamlessly it balances artful pop accessibility with an inherent, underlying gothic dread. The title track, "Heaven Is Waiting," remains a towering achievement of 1980s alternative music, driving forward on a relentless bass groove from Tim Wright that perfectly offsets the haunting, melodic bleakness of the lyrics. The band refuses to lean on simple pop tropes, instead utilizing complex rhythmic syncopation courtesy of drummer Paul Gilmartin to give tracks like "The Hurt" and "Valiant To Vile" a propulsive, muscular energy. The overarching atmosphere is one of dark, romantic yearning—a sonic blueprint that heavily influenced the emerging positive-punk and darkwave scenes of the decade.
The artistic peak of the core tracklist arrives via their bold interpretation of the Rolling Stones' psychedelic relic "2000 Light Years From Home". The Danse Society completely strips away the original 1960s whimsical experimentalism, rebuilding the track from the ground up as a driving, synthesizer-led space-goth anthem. Rawlings' vocals channel a profound sense of cosmic isolation, while Nash's guitar work spirals into textured, delayed feedback loops that perfectly complement the track's lyrical themes. This cover version stands as a brilliant testament to the band's ability to recontextualize classic rock history through a distinctively modern, post-punk lens, turning a dated counter-culture curiosity into a timeless club-night staple.
Ultimately, this expanded reissue transcends the standard archival release format by restoring the crucial tracks that completed the band's original artistic vision. The inclusion of atmospheric, cassette-only bonus tracks like "Endless", "Seduction", and "Seen The Light" adds immense historical depth, offering a bridge between their raw independent roots on Society Records and their slicker major-label era. While some contemporary 1984 rock purists initially dismissed the album's glossy production as overly theatrical, time has been incredibly kind to these recordings. Heaven Is Waiting stands as a beautifully preserved, brilliantly creative juncture where Yorkshire post-punk pushed boldly into the commercial vanguard without losing its dark, captivating soul.

DeleteIn my opinion, no Danse Society "best of" will ever get to the ankle of Heaven is Waiting. This album bears some of the best unknown songs ever written on the Dark Side. Just drop you ears on the songs re-edited on Bandcamp these days ( a beautiful gift ). You'll see what I mean. Red Light & Angel ... "some" success on the territory of ...Well that's not giving too much credits to these beauties. Again... "unknown" beauties... so THANKS AJ to bring up what should have been in our Heaven for years.
ReplyDeleteAhh Jack, you're welcome.
Deletethanks for this . I saw Danse Society at The Hacienda 1983ish. Brilliant. Many years later when my wife was nannying for a lovely couple, we found out that not only were the at Manchester Poly the same time I was at University of Manchester, but they were also at the same gig
