I actually quite like this album. Yes, given the
circumstances, it is a bit rushed, which shows... Each track is too long for
its own content, and clearly made to be as long as possible. But there is a
huge potential here, it is much more synth-driven, almost darkwave rather than
the imagined gothic rock. I've listened to Gift numerous times throughout the
years and every time it leaves me with a feeling of completeness of the message
it wanted to send. It almost feels solid as one entire entity. There are some
very good tracks, while great on their own, together sound better than the
individual sum of their parts. When released this was not exactly what most
Sisters fans would have enjoyed, but it isn’t The Sisters, it’s different, it
relies heavily on keyboards rather than guitars, it is a completely different
beast, it is The Sisterhood, therefore, totally worth giving it a try. Gift
would have probably received a much better public reaction if not for the
purpose of the release. For me, it turned out to be way better than what I
perceived before listening to it.

Er...sorry to say...if this was ripped from a cd, there was no point in ripping it to 24bit, as the cd source is in Redbook 16bit format.
ReplyDeleteWhile you can always reduce the quality of a recorded source, you can't increase its quality just by ripping it in a higher quality format...
Now...if this were a 24bit vinyl rip... :)
If it was my rip originally I'd agree, but as it wasn't I can't change how it is presented until some nice person tells me.

O usually use SOX in a batch file some Sox -infile b16 -outfile -r 44.1k at memory.
DeleteI ever keep original 24 in external HD, but for portable players 16/44100 is more than enough.
I have a SD full of DSD and Hi-res files but only for external DAC use and Selected audiophile production works.
Today space is cheap everyone judge for himself what he need.
If there are no vinyl artifacts left in the sound (and it is difficult to remove all crackle/rumble etc. from a vinyl source) then it's more than likely a cd rip, and thus a 24 bit rip does nothing for it but to pad the file size.

ReplyDeleteKonrad you're right, the 24 bits are useful for mastering / processing, if you don' t need to process your audio then is only space waste.
leaving aside that much of what is captured above 22HZ should be filtered to avoid damage to the speakers.
ReplyDeleteit is not disputed that a vinyl CAN have a better master than the CD, precisely because of the limited nature of the medium that lends itself less to abuse. not always true
