Bone Orchard - Stuffed To The Gills 12''EP

Stuffed To The Gills is the debut 6-track 12" EP by British post-punk band Bone Orchard, released in November 1983 via Jungle Records (JUNG 8). Formed in Brighton, the group paired Chrissy McGee’s raw, intense vocals with dark, blues-infused gothic rock, earning frequent comparisons to The Birthday Party and Siouxsie and the Banshees. The highly collectible vinyl release features notable tracks like "Fats Terminal" and "Knuckle The Butcher", complete with eccentric messages etched into the runout grooves. While long out of print in its original format, the entire EP was officially compiled onto CD and digital formats in 2011 as part of the expanded anthology Stuffed To The Gills & Other Fishy Tales.

Released in late 1983, Stuffed To The Gills remains a thrilling, mud-splattered artifact of the UK’s early deathrock and gothic post-punk underground. Emerging from Brighton, Bone Orchard instantly distinguished themselves by bypassing polished synth-pop in favour of a jagged, blues-inflected psychosis. Musically, the EP owes a massive debt to the swamp-rock chaos of The Birthday Party and the tribal drive of early Siouxsie and the Banshees, anchored by Mark Horse's jagged guitar riffs. Frontwoman Chrissy McGee dominates the claustrophobic soundscapes with a fierce, rasping delivery that swings between a manic howl and an unsettling sneer, setting a genuinely unnerving and unhinged tone across the six tracks.
Standout tracks like "Fats Terminal" and "Knuckle The Butcher" showcase a band operating with raw, kinetic energy, prioritising grime, friction, and atmosphere over clean production values. The driving rhythms and serrated basslines give the record an aggressive, danceable momentum, while the eccentric runout groove etchings hint at the band’s dark, absurdist humour. Though Bone Orchard burned out relatively quickly, this debut EP stands as a definitive, high-octane example of the Batcave-era sound. It is a vital, essential spin for collectors and listeners looking to dig deeper into the menacing, chaotic fringes of 1980s alternative music.

    1. The Birthday Party influences abound here and unfortunately for me this EP doesn’t always work. But when it does work there are subtle differences that includes the original lyrics and voice of Chrissy McGee. Like you say, when Chrissy quit there was no more band.

  2. With this and your previous post, you've delved into territory that, for me at least, was completely unknown. Which is another way of saying I've never heard of any of this stuff. And that's outstanding. Cheers.
