Freshly Riots - Delightfully Fresh 7''

Released in 1983 on the band's own fiercely independent label Bondeskiver (catalog number STIV 1), Delightfully Fresh is the debut 7" vinyl EP by the Danish punk and post-punk group Freshly Riots. Formed in Gedsted, a small town in Northern Jutland, Denmark, in October 1980/1981, the band brought a highly eccentric, localized energy to the early Danish punk wave. While many of their peers in Copenhagen leaned heavily into the bleak, industrial side of post-punk, Freshly Riots carved out an entirely distinct identity by integrating an old, squeaky organ into their setup. This unique instrumentation blended the raw, frantic aggression of 1977 street punk with a chaotic, 1960s garage psychedelia blueprint.
The original six-track 7" EP acts as a fierce, DIY time capsule of regional Danish punk rebellion. Composed by the core founding lineup of vocalist Bo Led Andersen, keyboardist P.G., guitarist Tjalfe (Jørn) Iversen, bassist Mike Hammer, and drummer Christian Frank, the entire record was recorded and distributed completely by the band themselves. The release immediately caught the attention of international underground tape traders and taste-making publications like the American zine Maximum Rocknroll, cementing Freshly Riots as a vital, cult-favourite outpost of the Scandinavian punk landscape before they shortened their name to Freshly later in the decade.

Musically, Delightfully Fresh is a thrillingly unpredictable, unpolished gem that completely subverts standard post-punk expectations. What instantly distinguishes the tracklist from standard 80s punk records is the prominent, manic presence of P.G.’s keyboard work. On tracks like the opening numbers "Für Den Führer" and "Alting", the squeaky, spinet organ tones intertwine seamlessly with Tjalfe Iversen’s jagged guitar attacks. Rather than diluting the band's punk velocity, the swirling, retro keys evoke a raw, chaotic 1960s garage-rock texture reminiscent of The Seeds or The Stranglers, giving faster cuts like "World Of Tomorrow" a nervous, danceable momentum that feels both dark and incredibly catchy.
The B-side pushes the band's frantic energy into deeply dystopian, atmospheric territories. "Punished And Humbled" and "No Brain" showcase a rhythm section that punches far above its weight, driven by Mike Hammer's driving basslines and Christian Frank's unrelenting drum patterns. The closing track "Well................" serves as the EP's true post-punk masterclass; it juxtaposes brittle, echoing organ notes against Bo Led Andersen's distressed vocal sneer, famously building toward a jarring, time-capsule simulation of a nuclear explosion right in the middle of the track. Decades after its self-funded pressing, this 7" EP remains an essential, brilliantly erratic monument of Danish underground history, capturing a brief moment when a group of teenagers from Gedsted successfully injected a dose of psychedelic madness into first-wave punk.
